Issue No. 8: Notes From The Studio
A Trip to Baltimore, Glenstone Museum, + Travel-Inspired Art
Last fall I visited Baltimore. I was there to spend time with my dear friend Jennifer Cooper and celebrate the relaunch of Jennifer Magazine — a digital publication and community that’s changing the way women talk about and experience midlife. It was so fun and energizing, creatively and emotionally.
One of my favorite things was visiting Glenstone. To call it a museum isn’t adequate — it’s an entire experience. We lucked out with beautiful weather to explore the outdoor sculptures and got inspired by Ellsworth Kelly At 100 inside the galleries.
I’ve seen Ellsworth Kelly’s work in person at the Seattle Art Museum and the Whitney, but Glenstone offered something that I connected with even more. There was a display of Kelly’s photography. Seeing this gave me insight into his creative vision — quite literally, how the artist saw the world.
I think I connected to it so much because photography is a huge part of my creative process. I’m constantly capturing shapes, color palettes, and compositions. Photos from vacations that I took years ago still inspire my paintings today.
Getting a glimpse inside the mind of an artist is one of my favorite things.
I strive to give that to you. It’s why I often pair photographs with my paintings or show you what I’m inspired by on my “good night” Instagram Stories. You can get to know me best as an artist when I allow you to see the world through my eyes.

Travel is always the best inspiration!
Melanie...whenever I see your Notes from the Studio pop up, I have to immediately stop what I’m doing and read what you’re seeing and experiencing. Good stuff. Thanks for posting.
